routines
I can no longer sleep late. A little over a decade of waking to an alarm has ruined that for me.
So on the weekends while my wife and son still slumber I go to the basement (a.k.a the cave) turn on the fire and the computer (in that order) and be a web geek for a while in the quite of our house.
As I sit at the desk and check email, scan through my RSS feeds, manage my other blog, update my iPod, or any of the other manner of web geekery I am really listening.
I listen for the stir of life upstairs in the form of my son’s feet pounding on the floor. When he gets to the foot of the basement stairs he runs at me full force and jumps into my arms.
I sit at the desk and hug him for a couple of minutes and he lays his head on my shoulder. This is how I start just about every weekend morning and I love it.
It is one of my favorite routines and the two days of early morning bear hugs from him are enough to energize me for the coming week.
As I write this I’m sitting in the basement, listening.
